Improving your home energy efficiency
Want to know the best ways to save money on your energy bills? A Home Energy Assessment provides advice tailored to you, including practical support like draught proofing and a heated throw blanket.
What is a home energy assessment?
The Home Energy Efficiency Program supports low-income households to reduce their energy bills (electricity and gas), by educating people about energy usage and modifying homes to become more energy efficient. The program is delivered by Vinnies on behalf of the ACT Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate.
What happens at a home energy assessment visit?
A home energy assessment involves a visit to your home by a friendly, experienced energy assessor. The assessor will work with you to complete an assessment of the home and provide information, advice and strategies for energy saving. They will complete draught sealing of any gaps around doors, windows and vents to help with the home’s comfort. You will also receive the cooling towel and heated throw rug during the assessment.
Who is eligible?
Participants must:
-
Live in the ACT
-
Hold a pension, concession, or Gold Card and/or fall within the income limits of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS)
What are the benefit?
Research shows that Energy efficient homes have many benefits, including reduced emissions, lower energy bills and improving health and wellbeing.
Households may benefit from the program by simply understanding the best ways to save on energy costs in their home.
More than half of annual energy bills in an average Canberra home are from heating alone.
Households may benefit by utilising the energy kit which includes an energy efficient heated throw blanket and cooling towel, potentially saving hundreds of dollars per year.
Draughts account for up to 25% of heat loss of a home, meaning households are forced to run heaters for longer to keep the heat in the home.
Draught proofing offered through the home energy efficiency program can help prevent heat loss – improving comfort and reducing energy costs from heating.
